Powdersville Cultural Festival

My class was asked by our professor, Takeuchi-sensei, if we would offer to aid one of her friends at a local international culture festival. Several booths would be opened, themed after myriad countries and their cultures. My professor's friend was a Japanese person married to an American man, and she had many old toys and trinkets ready to make the event a blast. Of the students affiliated with the Japanese language department only me and my friend Rubel-san offered to help, but we did our best to make the day an unforgettable one for all of the attendees!

Just to call the event extravagant would be an understatement. The person running the booth, Mayumi-san, was actually a teacher at a Japanese language training classroom, and her friends who also worked there had a large selection of traditional Japanese clothing for our audience to try on. Even after the event I have kept up with Mayumi-san, and I even participated in one of her Japanese lessons and got to know her friends!

Fukui University Teachers' Assembly

At the end of my semester at Fukui, my two friends from Guatemala and Mexico, Kandy and Ana, were going to be leading a presentation on the education systems of their respective countries, and I was invited to come and watch! To my surprise, when it came Kandy's time to present, the two of them asked if I could interpret for any questions the audience may have afterwards. I was surprised, but more than that, I was happy to be given the honor of helping! My favorite thing that I learned from the event is that the Day of the Dead has a symbolic flower related to it, known as the cempasúchil in Spanish, or the marigold in English. The event ended in a success, with many people interacting with each other with wonderful questions and comments. My teacher Satou-sensei even congratulated me for a job well done afterwards!
